Poster of 1699: The Peach Blossom Fanto be staged at the Guangzhou Opera House

As the highlight of this year's Guangzhou Art Season, 1699: The Peach Blossom Fan, a classic Chinese Kun opera will be staged at the Guangzhou Opera House from August 9 to 10.

Written by Kong Shangren in 1699, The Peach Blossom Fan is known as one of the best historical dramas from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Through telling the love story between the young scholar Hou Fangyu and the famous prostitute Li Xiangjun, it recounts the collapse of the Ming Dynasty in1644.

The upcoming opera was adapted from Kong's script by the Jiangsu Performing Arts Group in 2006. Directed by Tian Qinxin, the original 44 scenes were condensed into six ones, focusing on the most dramatic conflicts and most representative character moments. With a smooth rhythm and intense plot arrangement, the opera's tension erupts in a more concentrated manner.

Xiao Lihe, the opera's stage designer, creatively combines cultural relics into the stage set, such as using the Ming Dynasty painting "The Bustling and Hustling of Nanjing" as the stage background, giving the opera an authentic history vibe.
