The renowned Martha Graham Dance Company from the United States will have its first performance in South China at the Guangzhou Opera House on June 16 to 17.
The theme of their performances in China this year is "The First and The Future", and three classic pieces will be performed, including Appalachian Spring, Immediate Tragedy, and Canticle for Innocent Comedians.
As the oldest American contemporary dance company, it was launched by dancer-choreographer Martha Graham in 1926, and it has been a world-leading force in the evolving art form of contemporary dance. Known as the mother of American contemporary dance, Graham is named alongside Picasso and Stravinsky as one of the three giants of 20th-century art, and she was named the "Dancer of the Century" by TIME magazine.
Today, under the guidance of artistic director Janet Eilber, the company is trying to showcase Graham's works alongside newly commissioned works by contemporary artists, with rich narrative themes. In their performances in Guangzhou, the development of Graham, the company, American contemporary dance, and contemporary dance will be demonstrated to the audience.
