According to a recent press conference on safeguard measures for the 2025 Spring Festival, Guangzhou is anticipating 190 million passenger trips during this year's Spring Festival travel rush, with an average of over 4.74 million daily trips.
The Spring Festival travel rush will span 40 days, starting on January 14th and concluding on February 22nd. In the first three days of the travel rush, a total of 15.078 million passengers have left or arrived in Guangzhou. Major transportation hubs saw significant traffic, with Guangzhou South Railway Station averaging 468,000 arrivals and departures daily, Guangzhou Baiyun Station averaging 59,000, and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport averaging 235,000. On the city's expressway network, 7.903 million vehicles were recorded.
Based on forecasts, major hubs, and expressway networks are expected to experience three travel peaks. The first will be a departure peak from January 22nd to 27th, followed by return peaks from February 2nd to 4th and three days after the Lantern Festival (the 16th to 18th day of the lunar new year).
Guangzhou Metro and bus services extended
Guangzhou Metro lines 2 and 7 and four others will extend their operating hours by one hour from February 2nd to 4th. Specifically, Lines 2 and 7 will operate express trains departing from Guangzhou South Railway Station, extending service by 1.5 hours until 2:00 am the following day.
On February 5th and 6th and from February 12th to 15th, Lines 2 and 7 will add express trains departing from Guangzhou South Railway Station, with service extended by 75 minutes until 0:45 am.
Moreover, 24-night bus routes serving major hubs will dynamically extend their operating hours by 20 minutes after the last subway train arrives. During peak hours, 800 to 1,200 taxis will be deployed daily to ensure transportation to and from hubs. Ride-hailing platforms are also encouraged to adopt incentive mechanisms to boost drivers' participation in passenger evacuation.
During the flower market period from January 25th to 27th, eight subway lines, including Line 1, will extend their operating hours by one hour. On Lunar New Year's Eve (January 28th), the entire Guangzhou subway network will extend its services by 1.5 hours. To facilitate citizens' night-time flower viewing and purchasing, over 20 bus routes passing near flower markets will expand their services by 20 minutes after the markets close.
On Chinese New Year's Day (January 29th), during and after the fireworks display, the metro will increase capacity on lines passing through Huangsha, Fangcun, and Ruyifang stations, shortening train intervals. In terms of buses, measures such as increasing frequencies, deploying empty buses, and temporary route adjustments will be implemented to ensure smooth transportation. Additionally, Guangzhou's public transport companies will operate 23 customized bus routes for fireworks viewing and city tours, providing convenience for citizens to visit flower markets, lantern displays, and fireworks events.
