Construction of a large quarantine facility has been completed in Nansha district of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, with the first group of people already being isolated at the facility on Monday.
The facility, with a construction area of 547,000 square meters, was designed to hold more than 80,000 beds in 20,000 rooms according to China Construction Fourth Engineering Division Corp.
It is so far the largest project for the isolation of people from high-risk areas in terms of construction space and accommodation in Guangzhou, as the city has strengthened its efforts to fight the current COVID-19 outbreak.
Each room, with an area of 18 square meters, is equipped with a private bathroom, water heater and other living necessities, according to the company.
Local authorities have pledged to build more quarantine facilities and fangcang, or makeshift hospitals, to combat COVID-19 infection.
In Qingyuan, a city neighboring Guangzhou, construction of another large quarantine base is also underway with a designed capacity of 40,000 beds.
Guangzhou reported 6,995 new infections on Tuesday, of which 68 were found at the community level, and reported none were in severe or critical condition.
