On March 27, the Guangzhou Urban Innovation Index Report (2023) was released, comprehensively evaluating the city's scientific and technological innovation abilities.
The report focuses on five dimensions of scientific and technological innovation, such as "scientific discovery, technological invention, industrial development, talent, and ecological optimization."
In terms of scientific discovery, 134 disciplines from 13 universities in Guangzhou entered the top one percent of the Essential Science Indicators(ESI) ranking in the world in 2023, ranking fourth in China. ESI was released by Clarivate Analytics.

In the field of technological invention, the number of invention patents per 10,000 resident population increased from 38.07 per 10,000 in 2020 to 62.85 per 10,000 in 2022.
Regarding industrial development, high-tech enterprises, which account for 6‰ of the total number of enterprises in 2023, contributed 20% of the corporate income tax and 40% of the total corporate profits in Guangzhou.

As for talent, Guangzhou has attracted a large number of high-level talents, the index number of highly cited scientists is especially outstanding, and the full-time equivalent index of R&D per 10,000 employees increased rapidly.

In terms of ecological optimization, the amount of income tax deduction for enterprise R&D expenses in Guangzhou increased from more than 50 billion yuan in 2020 to more than 90 billion yuan in 2022. The improvement of the overall level of scientific and technological innovation in Guangzhou is inseparable from the resource advantages of the innovation platform, university resources, location, and policy advantages.
The report was jointly released by the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development, the Guangzhou Productivity Promotion Center, and the Guangzhou Science and Technology Development Research Center.
